What Picatinny Rail Do I Need for My Rifle?

What you need to confirm before you purchase a Picatinny rail:

Confirm your rifle make, model, and era of manufacturer if possible.  

It's probably stamped on the action or the barrel.  Some rifle models utilized different mounting specifications during different eras of production.  For example, a late Winchester Model 70 has a different hole spacing than an early model.  

Also make sure you know the full model name of your rifle, because that matters.  For example, A Howa 1500 is chambered in short action and long action calibers. However, a Howa Mini 1500 is an entirely different action with its own Picatinny rail specifications, and rails are not interchangeable between the two.  Yes, this is an example from experience.  We sent multiple Picatinny rails for a Howa 1500 to a customer before we figured out what rifle they actually had.

Confirm your rifle caliber.

This may or may not change which picatinny rail you end up choosing, depending on whether or not your rifle model has separate lengths for long action or short action calibers.  Some models, like the Remington 700, utilize both long and short actions.  Other models, such as the Tikka T3, have one action size for all calibers. 

Confirm that your action is drilled and tapped for scope mounting.

If your rifle is not drilled and tapped from the factory for scope mounting, then you can't mount a picatinny rail without additional gunsmithing.  Compatible rails are listed with the assumption that your rifle was drilled and tapped from the factory with the proper hole spacing specifications.  This isn't always the case. 

If your rifle is not drilled and tapped for scope mounting, you have two choices:

• Purchase a picatinny rail for your rifle, and have a gunsmith drill and tap the receiver using its hole spacing.
• Find a rifle that is drilled and tapped for a mount.

For peace of mind, confirm your mounting hole spacing before purchasing.

Rifle manufacturers sometimes change their actions and factory mounting specifications. This sometimes causes confusion when you purchase a rail that should fit your rifle, but mounting holes don't line up.  Measuring your factory hole spacing can also help avoid errors that occur when one model of rifle is mistaken for another.  Contact us with your mounting hole spacing measurements and we'll confirm before you buy.
