Harris Bipod Notched vs. Smooth Legs: Which Should You Choose?

When shopping for a Harris bipod, one of the most common decisions is whether to choose notched legs or smooth legs. The difference may look minor, but the two designs adjust in noticeably different ways.

Harris offers notched-leg versions of several popular bipods, including the BRM and LM models. The corresponding models without the M designation use the standard smooth-leg design. For example, the Harris S-BR has smooth legs, while the Harris S-BRM has notched legs. Both are 6-9 inch swivel bipods, so the leg adjustment system is the primary difference.

At first glance, notched legs might seem like an obvious upgrade. They allow quick, positive height adjustments and are particularly convenient when the rifle needs to be deployed quickly. Smooth legs, however, provide continuous adjustment rather than restricting the shooter to predetermined positions.

Neither system is universally better. The better choice depends on how you use your rifle, how precisely you need to set the bipod height, how quickly you need to make adjustments, and whether you regularly shoot on uneven terrain.

The central tradeoff is simple:

  • Notched legs prioritize speed and repeatability.
  • Smooth legs prioritize continuous height adjustment.

What Is the Difference Between Harris Notched and Smooth Legs?

The difference is the way the telescoping legs lock into position.

On a notched Harris bipod, the leg extension contains predetermined adjustment points. A spring-loaded mechanism engages those positions, allowing the shooter to quickly move the leg between preset heights. Harris identifies the BRM and LM models as its notched-leg configurations.

On a smooth-leg Harris bipod, the leg extension does not use those predetermined notches. Instead, the shooter positions the leg at the desired height and secures it by tightening the knob that locks leg height adjustment.

That creates a fundamental difference in how the two bipods feel during setup.  With notched legs, you are essentially choosing between a series of available positions. With smooth legs, you can position the leg wherever you need it within the available adjustment range.

How Do Harris Notched Legs Work?

Notched Harris legs are designed for rapid height adjustment. When the leg release is activated, the spring-loaded leg can extend outward. The shooter then selects the desired notch and releases the mechanism to lock the leg into that position. Harris describes the notched-leg design as providing quick intermediate adjustments once the user becomes familiar with the technique.

The result is a very straightforward adjustment process:

  1. Release the leg.
  2. Move the leg to the desired position.
  3. Let the mechanism engage the notch.
  4. Repeat for the other leg if necessary.

This can be especially convenient when the shooter needs to change the rifle's height without spending much time manipulating adjustment screws.

How Do Harris Smooth Legs Work?

Smooth Harris legs use a different adjustment method. Instead of locking into a series of predetermined notches, the leg can be positioned continuously within its adjustment range. The shooter adjusts the leg to the desired position and uses the leg's locking mechanism to secure it.

The biggest advantage is fine control over the exact leg length.

For example, suppose the rifle needs to be raised slightly on one side but none of the available notched positions produces exactly the height you want. A smooth leg allows you to make a smaller adjustment. This can be useful when the bipod is being used on a shooting surface where small differences in leg height matter.

Are Harris Notched Legs Better?

For many shooters, yes. But "better" depends on what you want the bipod to do.

Some shooters strongly prefer notched legs because they can be adjusted much more quickly. Notched legs are often easier to adjust quickly or from an awkward position, with the tradeoff that the notches limit the available height positions.  That tradeoff is the key.

  • If you value speed more than extremely fine adjustment, notched legs are usually the more attractive option.
  • If you value precise positioning more than speed, smooth legs may be preferable.

Are Smooth Harris Bipod Legs More Precise?

They can be. The advantage of smooth legs is that you are not limited to the fixed positions created by the notches. This gives you greater control over the exact length of each leg. That can matter when you are trying to establish a very specific rifle position, particularly on uneven ground.

Some shooters who prefer smooth legs specifically value this ability to make small height changes rather than being restricted to the intervals established by the notched-leg mechanism. However, precision adjustment does not automatically translate into a better shooting setup. If you can achieve a comfortable and stable position with the available notches, the additional adjustment provided by smooth legs may not provide a meaningful advantage.

Which Is Faster to Adjust: Notched or Smooth Harris Legs?

Notched legs are generally faster. This is probably the biggest practical reason shooters choose the M models. With a notched bipod, the leg can be moved directly between predetermined positions. The adjustment mechanism is designed around quick changes.

With smooth legs, the shooter has to position the leg manually and secure the adjustment. That difference becomes more noticeable when:

  • The rifle needs to be deployed quickly.
  • You are shooting from an awkward position.
  • You are changing terrain frequently.
  • You need to adjust one leg independently of the other.
  • You are setting up in the field rather than on a prepared bench.

Are Notched Harris Bipods Good for Hunting?

Notched legs can be particularly convenient for hunting because field positions are rarely as predictable as shooting from a prepared bench. A hunter may need to establish a shooting position quickly, adjust the rifle height, or compensate for uneven ground. Being able to move the bipod legs directly to a predetermined position can save time.

Some shooters specifically prefer notched Harris bipods for hunting because they are easier to adjust when the rifle is already positioned for a shot. That does not mean smooth legs are unsuitable for hunting. A hunter who values precise leg positioning and has enough time to establish the shooting position may prefer the additional control of smooth legs.

Are Smooth Legs Better for Bench Shooting?

Not necessarily. Bench shooting is one of the situations where the difference between the two systems can become relatively small. Once the rifle is positioned on the bench, you may have plenty of time to establish the desired height. That gives smooth legs an opportunity to show their advantage because you can fine-tune the exact position.

However, a notched bipod can work just as well if one of its preset positions gives you the desired rifle height. The choice therefore comes down to whether you value fine adjustment or quick adjustment.

Do Notched Legs Make a Harris Bipod More Stable?

Notched legs do not automatically make the bipod more stable simply because they are notched. What they do provide is a positive locking system at predetermined positions. Some shooters describe this as giving them confidence that the leg will remain where they placed it, particularly during field use.

The actual stability of the shooting position depends on much more than the leg design. The bipod's base, leg position, shooting surface, rifle, stock, loading technique and the shooter's position all matter. A smooth-leg Harris bipod that is properly adjusted can provide a very stable shooting platform as well.

Can Smooth Harris Bipod Legs Slip?

They can if the leg adjustment is not properly secured. This is one reason some shooters prefer the positive feel of the notched system. The important point is that a smooth-leg bipod requires the shooter to properly secure the adjustment mechanism after setting the desired height.  A properly adjusted smooth-leg bipod should not be treated as inherently unstable simply because it lacks notches.

Do Notched Legs Limit Height Adjustment?

Yes.

This is the primary disadvantage of notched legs. The leg can only lock into the positions provided by the notches. If the ideal leg length falls between two positions, you have to choose the closest available setting.

For many shooters, this is a minor compromise. The adjustment intervals are close enough for their purposes, and the speed of the notched system is more valuable than the ability to make infinitely small changes. For shooters who frequently need to establish very precise leg lengths, smooth legs can be more useful.

What Does the "M" Mean on a Harris Bipod?

The M in Harris model numbers identifies the notched-leg configuration. For example:

  • S-BR: 6-9 inch swivel bipod with smooth legs.
  • S-BRM: 6-9 inch swivel bipod with notched legs.

The BR portion identifies the 6-9 inch height class. The M changes the leg adjustment system. The same basic distinction applies to the L-series:

  • S-L: 9-13 inch swivel bipod with smooth legs.
  • S-LM: 9-13 inch swivel bipod with notched legs.

Harris's documentation specifically identifies the BRM and LM models as notched-leg bipods.

Harris S-BR vs. S-BRM: What's the Difference?

The S-BR and S-BRM are essentially the same basic Harris configuration except for the leg adjustment system.

If you already know that you want a 6-9 inch Series S Harris bipod, the decision between these two models essentially comes down to smooth versus notched legs.

Harris S-L vs. S-LM: What's the Difference?

The same principle applies to the 9-13 inch models.

  • S-L uses smooth legs.
  • S-LM uses notched legs.

Both are Series S bipods in the 9-13 inch height class. The S-LM therefore gives you the faster adjustment system of the M configuration, while the S-L gives you continuous leg adjustment.

Notched vs. Smooth Harris Legs on Uneven Ground

Uneven terrain is where the difference between the two designs can become particularly noticeable. With notched legs, you can quickly move each leg to a different preset position. This makes it easier to compensate for uneven ground without spending much time on the adjustment. Smooth legs give you more control over the exact amount of adjustment.

Neither system eliminates the need to position the rifle correctly. If you are using a Series S Harris bipod, the swivel function can also help compensate for uneven ground by allowing the rifle to cant independently of the bipod's legs. That means a shooter dealing with uneven terrain should consider both leg design and base design.

A notched S Series bipod, for example, combines rapid leg adjustment with the ability to cant the rifle. This is one reason the S-BRM configuration is popular among shooters who want a general-purpose field bipod.

Notched vs. Smooth Legs for a Precision Rifle

A precision rifle does not automatically require smooth or notched legs.  The better choice depends on how the rifle is being used. For a rifle that stays on a prepared range and is carefully positioned before each shot, smooth legs can provide useful fine adjustment. For a rifle that moves between different shooting positions or is used in the field, notched legs can make setup faster.

Some precision-rifle shooters prefer notched legs specifically because they find the additional speed more useful than the extra adjustment available from smooth legs. Others prefer the fine control of the smooth system.

Notched vs. Smooth Legs for Hunting

For hunting, the notched configuration is often the easier choice if quick adjustment is important. A hunting position may not be perfectly level, and the shooter may have limited time to establish a stable rest. Notched legs allow the shooter to make a rapid height change without carefully manipulating a smooth adjustment system.

However, smooth legs can be valuable for hunters who routinely spend time building a very precise shooting position. If you hunt from fixed blinds, prepared shooting positions or other locations where setup time is not a concern, the additional adjustment offered by smooth legs may be more useful.

Notched vs. Smooth: Which Harris Bipod Should You Buy?

Use this simple decision guide.

Choose Notched Legs If:

  • You want the fastest possible height adjustment.
  • You frequently change shooting positions.
  • You hunt or shoot in unpredictable terrain.
  • You want easy one-handed leg adjustment.
  • You do not need extremely fine height adjustments.
  • You prefer positive, preset adjustment positions.

Choose Smooth Legs If:

  • You want continuous height adjustment.
  • You frequently need to fine-tune individual leg lengths.
  • You shoot from carefully prepared positions.
  • You want the ability to position the legs between preset intervals.
  • You are comfortable spending more time setting the bipod height.

What If You Can't Decide?

If you are buying your first Harris bipod and are unsure which leg design to choose, the notched configuration is a practical starting point for many general-purpose applications. The reason is not that notched legs are inherently more accurate or more stable. It is that the faster adjustment tends to be useful in more situations, particularly when shooting outside of a perfectly controlled range environment. The S-BRM is a good example. It combines a 6-9 inch height range with the Series S swivel base and notched legs, giving the shooter a relatively compact bipod with quick height adjustment and the ability to compensate for uneven terrain.

On the other hand, if you already know that you want continuous height adjustment, there is little reason to choose the M model simply because it is more popular.

Notched vs. Smooth Harris Bipods: The Bottom Line

The difference between Harris notched and smooth legs comes down to a tradeoff between speed and adjustment precision.

  • Notched legs are faster. They lock into predetermined positions and make it easy to change the bipod height quickly.
  • Smooth legs are more adjustable. They allow the shooter to position each leg at virtually any point within its adjustment range.

For hunting, field shooting and situations where the rifle may need to be repositioned quickly, many shooters find the notched system more convenient. For carefully prepared shooting positions where precise leg length matters, smooth legs can make more sense. Neither design makes a Harris bipod inherently more accurate. The right choice is the one that lets you establish a stable, comfortable and repeatable shooting position with the least difficulty.

When reading Harris model numbers, remember the simplest distinction:

  • M: notched legs.
  • No M: smooth legs.

Once you understand that distinction, comparing models such as the S-BR and S-BRM or S-L and S-LM becomes much easier.
